Installation

  • The agent is first installed (as a daemonset)
  • Envoy is then also installed as a daemonset. Envoy handles Layer 7 traffic
  • The cilium operator is also installed

Installation Methods

  • You can install cilium via the cilium cli or helm
  • The cilium CLI uses helm ‘under the hood’

Installation with the CLI

  • Follow the documtenation to install the cilium cli
  • Run cilium install to install cilium in your cluster. This step installs cilium via helm. You can even pass in a helm values file: cilium install --values values.yaml
  • cilium status --wait can be used to check the status of cilium (during or after installation)
  • You can run cilium install --dry-run to dry-run the install

Installation with helm

  • You first need to add the helm cilium repo
    • helm repo add cilium https://helm.cilium.io
    • if using OCI registries, you do not need to add the repo first.
  • Install the helm chart
    • OCI: helm install cilium oci://quay.io/cilium/charts/cilium 1.20.2 --namespace kube-system
    • helm repo: helm install cilium cilium/cilium --version 1.20.2 --namespace kube-system
  • You can view the values for the cilium helm chart: helm show values cilium/cilium
  • you can view the installed helm manifest: helm get manifest cilium -n kube-system
